Carbon fiber is a textile consisting mainly of carbon. It is produced by spinning various carbon-based polymers into fibers, treating them to remove most of the other substances, and weaving the resulting material into a fabric. This is usually embedded in plastic - typically epoxy - to form carbon fiber reinforced plastic or carbon fiber composite. The most notable features of the material are its high strength-to-weight-ratio and its relative chemical inertness. These properties give it a wide range of applications.
